Fernando's Departure

With a somewhat heavy heart, I bid adieu to Fernando today, a huge beautiful rooster raised from day one here at the HAH.

As a baby we kept the mark on his head freshened so we could always tell who he was - or would be! The big important future rooster of the homestead.

Now, don't worry; there was not an accident with a dog, or anything horrific like that. He just got the opportunity to go to a new home, where there were new people, not afraid of roosters who give out the 'evil eye' and proceed to pounce on you. Fernando was Re-homed.

After two weeks of semi attacks, and stealthily creeping around my OWN chicken coop and pen with a plastic stick to protect myself, I finally just decided that was ENOUGH. It is hard not to feel a little guilty since his #1 wife was calling for him to protect her from my putting eggs under her after he left, but it was outweighed by a sudden sense of RELIEF that I can now tend to the business of the coop.

I have two little red babies from Fernando, hatched by my Silkie hens, and they need care, relocating, feeding and watering every day without the fear of me losing an eyeball or having my face rearranged by a crazy rooster. (Okay - he wasn't THAT bad, but the handwriting was on the wall!)

For now, we'll wish him well.
